Philadelphia Magazine Recognizes Services at Albert Einstein Healthcare Network as "Centers of Excellence"
Philadelphia, PA, May 12, 2003—A select group of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network services have been cited as "Centers of Excellence" by
Philadelphia Magazine in the "Top Hospitals," May 2003 issue. The issue highlights centers of medical excellence that were chosen for meeting criteria
set by the magazine, including: offering cutting edge clinical care, involvement in research projects and having an educational
component. The purpose of a Center is to offer "one-stop shopping" where all of a patient’s medical needs are taken care of
in one location.
After very careful evaluation and with fierce competition in the Philadelphia healthcare market, the following programs/services
in the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network were selected and recognized by
Philadelphia Magazine: (Descriptions published in the article are included):
-
Albert Einstein Medical Center Geriatric Services
- Einstein is particularly strong in treating low-income, at-risk frail elderly.
- A Russian-speaking physician visits homebound immigrants.
- Hospice is available
-
Drucker Brain Injury Center at MossRehab
Treating more than 700 people with brain injuries each year through its inpatient, outpatient and community programs, this
center is a national leader and one of the few rehab hospitals in the U.S. to operate its own research facility. Designated
by the government as providing a "Model System of Care" for traumatic brain injury, the team, led by Nathaniel Mayer, a pioneer
in the field, has a record of returning 90 percent of its patients to their homes.
-
Eating Disorders Program at Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment
Patients range from a 13-year-old bulimic to a 40-year-old who’s been battling food issues most of her life. The center’s
relatively small capacity (12 beds) ensures that patients receive the constant, intensive care necessary for their recovery,
says director Denise Lensky. Treatment at Belmont relies on two components: nutritional rehab to help patients eat normally
again, and psychological services to get at the emotional underpinnings of the disease. The center offers inpatient treatment,
outpatient services, and a free after-care support group. A priority here is community outreach – staff members lecture at
area high schools, universities and health centers.
-
MossRehab Stroke Center
Consistently ranked by
U.S. News as one of the nation’s best facilities in its field, MossRehab sees nearly 500 stroke patients each year, making it the largest
provider in the region. It offers varying degrees of rehab, from inpatient treatment for the most severe, debilitating cases
to outpatient therapies for those who need to relearn basic everyday activities. Moss houses the Motor Control Analysis Lab
– the only one of its kind in the city – to determine the capabilities of patients with central nervous system disorders.
Services to promote independence include adaptive home evaluations, and a driving school where, once cognitive functions are
tested, patients are helped to get back on the road.
-
Marion-Louise Saltzman Women’s Center
Gathered here are a group of experts dedicated to caring for women’s bodies and souls as they progress from youth to old age.
The many programs include complete diagnostic, surgical and treatment care for breast health, under the direction of Robert
Somers, Debra Somers-Copit and Lisa Jablon; internal medicine/primary care; alternative and complementary medicine; behavioral
health; and gynecology. Education and prevention are emphasized through lectures, health screenings, wellness counseling and
other special events.
-
Trauma
Albert Einstein Medical Center was noted as a top trauma center.
Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, a member of the Jefferson Health System, provides healthcare services through Albert Einstein
Medical Center, Germantown Community Health Services, Willow Terrace at Germantown Campus (a long-term care facility), MossRehab,
Willowcrest (a center for subacute care), Belmont Behavioral Health and a number of outpatient and satellite locations. Einstein
also operates a primary care network, Einstein Neighborhood Healthcare.
