Belmont’s Geriatric Intensive Outpatient Program Relocates to Philadelphia Center for Human Development
Philadelphia, PA, September 5, 2003— The Geriatric Intensive Outpatient Program, part of Belmont Behavioral Health, has relocated to the Philadelphia Center
for Human Development located at 10360 Drummond Road in Northeast Philadelphia. The program had been at the Smiley Times Building
on Rhawn Street and Roosevelt Boulevard.
"The purpose of the move was to consolidate behavioral health services at one site in the Northeast, so the relocation benefits
patients as well as staff," says Carol Carrino, MS, Unit Coordinator for the program. "We’re only ten minutes from where we
were, so we’re still serving the residents of the Northeast, and now we’re in a larger facility." The Philadelphia Center
for Human Development is also part of Belmont Behavioral Health and provides a variety of mental health services.
The Geriatric Intensive Outpatient Program is a therapeutic program for men and women 60 and older who live at home or in
assisted living. They may be grieving the loss of a loved one, feeling depressed or anxious, struggling with health problems,
or adjusting to changes in their roles or living situations. Patients receive a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, ongoing
treatment, psychiatric/medical monitoring and medication management.
The daily program consists of two group therapy sessions run by masters-level trained psychotherapists who focus on coping
skills and stress management. "The aim of these sessions is to improve patients’ ability to cope and prevent mental deterioration
and inpatient psychiatric admissions," says Carrino. In addition, family and individual therapies may be provided, as needed.
Care is provided under the supervision of Medical Director Kenneth Rosenstein, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist who evaluates
each program participant and guides the development of personalized treatment plans.
The program hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Patients can come to the program up to three days a week. As
they show progress, the number of days or group sessions are reduced. Transportation and lunch are provided. The cost of the
program is covered by Medicare and most supplemental insurance plans.
Belmont Behavioral Health, part of the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, is one of the largest, most comprehensive behavioral
health systems in Philadelphia. Belmont Behavioral Health treats a variety of emotional and psychiatric problems, including
substance abuse, eating disorders, depression and anxiety disorders, among others.
