Marion-Louise Saltzman Women’s Center Hosts Symposium That Explores Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment and Recovery
Philadelphia, PA, October 18, 2003—The Marion-Louise Saltzman Women’s Center at Albert Einstein Medical Center is hosting its 21st annual breast cancer symposium,
entitled “A Leap Forward: Advances in Breast Cancer Care and Recovery” on Saturday, October 18, 2003, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45
a.m. The event costs $20 per person and will feature a keynote address by Pennsylvania State Senator Allyson Schwartz, lectures
and workshops by breast cancer experts on staff at Einstein Medical Center, as well as “Stories of Personal Triumph” from
breast cancer survivors.
Senator Allyson Schwartz was a natural choice to serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Since she was first elected to the
Pennsylvania Senate in 1990, she has championed many women’s health causes. Her proposals have resulted in laws that guarantee
the quality of Pennsylvania’s mammography facilities; require insurance companies to cover Pap smears and gynecological exams;
and ensure direct access to obstetricians and gynecologists in managed care plans. Senator Schwartz has also secured funding
for a new domestic violence initiative in hospital emergency rooms.
Following a continental breakfast and opening remarks, the symposium will offer 15-minutes talks by four prominent Einstein
physicians. Robert Somers, MD, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Einstein’s Breast Cancer Program, will
discuss “Explorations in Breast Cancer Detection and Treatment.” Debra Somers Copit, MD, Director of Breast Imaging, will
talk about screenings for breast cancer and their usefulness. Lisa Jablon, MD, Director of the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment
Program, will address the topic of young women with breast cancer. Arnold Cohen, MD, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology, will speak about the genetics of breast and ovarian cancer. Drs. Somers, Somers Copit and Jablon have all
been recognized as “Top Docs” by Philadelphia Magazine.
“Stories of Personal Triumph” is an uplifting segment in which breast cancer survivors share their journeys from detection
to recovery. The participants are expected to provide moving, inspirational stories to audience members—many of whom have
been touched by breast cancer themselves.
Following the keynote address and a boxed lunch, three concurrent workshops will be offered. Registered dietitian Irene Kristensson
will conduct a healthy cooking demonstration, and participants will have the opportunity to sample the tasty foods she prepares.
Steven Copit, MD, a breast reconstruction specialist who was listed this year as a “Top Doc” in Philadelphia Magazine, will
discuss what’s new in breast reconstruction surgery. Jamie Jessar, PhD, the Marion-Louise Saltzman’s dedicated psychologist,
will talk about what women need to do to move forward with their lives after breast cancer.
Jewelry and fabric artist Anna Sarmiento will sell her beautiful and affordable jewelry and scarves during breaks in the conference.
At the end of the day, a generous gift basket will be raffled to one lucky attendee.
Free parking is provided at Einstein Medical Center on the day of the event. To register or to learn more, call 1-800-EINSTEIN.
