Albert Einstein Medical Center Selects St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children to Provide Pediatric Inpatient Care

Philadelphia, PA, June 15, 2004—Albert Einstein Medical Center (Einstein) has entered into a new relationship with St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children (St. Christopher’s). Einstein pediatric patients requiring hospitalization will be transferred to St. Christopher’s, where Einstein’s pediatricians will work with St. Christopher’s specialists to provide complete care for these patients.

After evaluating its program, Einstein decided that pediatric patients and their families would be better served if Einstein closed its pediatric inpatient unit and combined its patient care efforts with a children’s hospital. According to Allan M. Arbeter, MD, Chairman, Einstein Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, “Our selection of St. Christopher’s as our preferred pediatric inpatient provider was an easy one. Quite simply, we chose St. Christopher’s because they value quality inpatient care as much as we do, and this relationship enables Einstein’s and St. Christopher’s physicians to work together to offer our patients the best possible care.”

Einstein pediatricians and pediatric residents will care for patients who are admitted from Einstein’s primary care network or its emergency departments to the Einstein service at St. Christopher’s. Patients will benefit from consultations by St. Christopher’s specialists in a variety of disciplines, including cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, nephrology and gastroenterology.

Children can continue to receive emergency outpatient care at the emergency departments located at Albert Einstein Medical Center (5501 Old York Road), Germantown Community Health Services (One Penn Boulevard) and Einstein at Elkins Park (50 East Township Line Road). Children who require hospitalization will be transferred by ambulance to St. Christopher’s. Einstein will continue its busy labor and delivery program, which provides care for full-term newborns, and also cares for premature infants in its 21-bed level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
