
George C. Newman, MD, PhD, Named Chairman, Department of Neurosensory Sciences, Albert Einstein Medical Center
Philadelphia, PA, January 26, 2006– George C. Newman, MD, PhD, has been appointed Chairman, Department of Neurosensory Sciences, Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Dr. Newman will be responsible for the growth of the department and the expansion of neurology services throughout Albert
Einstein Healthcare Network.
Certified by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Newman comes to Einstein from the University of Wisconsin Medical
School and UWHealth in Madison, WI, where he served as an attending neurologist and Director of the Stroke Program and Inpatient
Services. Dr. Newman also served as Professor of Neurology, Professor of Radiology and Director of the Residency Program at
the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine.
Prior to his appointments in Wisconsin, Dr. Newman served as Director of the Stroke Program at University Hospital, State
University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Newman also served as Professor of Neurology and Professor of Radiology at the
State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine.
Dr. Newman received his BA from Haverford College. He received his PhD in Physical Biochemistry and his MD from the University
of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. He underwent internship and residency training in internal medicine at the Roger Williams
General Hospital at Brown University, Providence, RI. He completed his residency in neurology at the University of Virginia
Medical Center.
Dr. Newman is currently serving as site Principal Investigator for several research studies funded by major pharmaceutical
companies to assess promising drug therapies for acute ischemic stroke patients. Dr. Newman has also conducted research funded
by the National Institutes of Health to study the neurochemistry of cerebral ischemia and reperfusion as well as stroke-related
research funded by major pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Newman’s research has been published in many peer-reviewed journals
including Stroke, Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease and Journal of Neurosurgery.
