Albert Einstein Medical Center Among the Nation’s Top 50
Most Active Renal Transplant Centers
Philadelphia, PA, January 30, 2007- According to the National Kidney Foundation, approximately 20 million Americans have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that eventually
can lead to kidney failure. When the kidneys fail, patients have two options: dialysis or kidney transplantation. While dialysis
is successful in maintaining life, kidney transplantation offers a more complete restoration of kidney function and provides
a higher quality of life.
Albert Einstein Medical Center is doing its part to help patients in need of transplantation. This month, Nephrology News & Issues magazine released its list of the nation’s top 50 “Most Active Renal Transplant Centers” for 2005. With 133 transplants in
2005, Albert Einstein Medical Center has placed 29th nationally, and ranks as the second most active among Philadelphia area
hospitals. This marks the first time Einstein Medical Center has made the list. In 2004, the medical center fell shy of the
top 50, with just under 100 transplants.
“We view making this list as an important accomplishment and an indication of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network’s commitment
to outstanding performance and service,” said Radi Zaki, MD, Section Chief, Division of Renal & Pancreas Transplantation.
“The growth and success of our renal transplant program is due to the hard work and diligence of the entire Einstein team.
The team’s dedication and enthusiasm is evidenced by the positive remarks made by the patients and families in our care.”
Nephrology News & Issues was launched in 1986. According to its executive editor, the list of the top 50 most active renal transplant centers has
been a regular annual feature in the magazine for the past decade. The rankings are based on the total number of kidney and
kidney/pancreas transplants performed in the year, according to data supplied by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
