MossRehab Provides Rehabilitation for Wounded Military Personnel
Philadelphia, PA, August 6, 2007 ─ More than 1.5 million U.S. military personnel have been sent to Iraq and Afghanistan since operations began in 2001. And
approximately 28,000 have been wounded in action. They are generally treated at one of the four Department of Defense (DoD)
overtaxed Polytrauma Centers. Thanks to an agreement with TRICARE ─ the Department of Defense’s worldwide health care program
for active duty and retired uniformed services members and their families ─ MossRehab can offer these wounded soldiers a wide
range of specialized services, thus easing the load faced by the DoD.
As the largest provider of rehabilitation services in the Philadelphia region, MossRehab has consistently been named one of
the top rehabilitation providers in America by US News & World Report magazine. Whatever the physical disability ─ whether it be caused by a traumatic brain injury, the loss of limbs, a spinal
cord injury, or another debilitating injury ─ MossRehab provides comprehensive clinical expertise, specialized services, and
unique diagnostic capabilities.
For soldiers who have lost a limb or multiple limbs, MossRehab Amputee Center provides a full complement of services, including
everything from rehabilitation counseling to an on-site prosthetic service that fabricates and fits both mechanical and electronic
artificial limbs.
It is estimated that 60 percent to 70 percent of injured service members suffer traumatic brain injuries. MossRehab offers
the most advanced, specialized and individualized programs aimed at helping these individuals develop the skills necessary
for performing everyday activities in their home and community. Vocational counselors provide new skills, education support,
job placement and on-site job coaching so these men and women can resume gainful activity.
“We are currently treating a young male soldier who was hit in the head by sniper fire, and as a result suffers significant
brain injury. He did not come to MossRehab through the TRICARE agreement, but due to his mother’s tireless efforts to get
her son treated closer to their home in Scranton, Pennsylvania,” said Ruth Lefton, Chief Operating Officer, MossRehab. “For this mother, it was a lengthy and frustrating process to get her son sent to Moss.
With the TRICARE agreement, wounded soldiers can be sent to non-DoD facilities like Moss without the bureaucracy that this
mother had to navigate. We are delighted to be working alongside the Department of Defense to help our wounded soldiers achieve
the most successful outcomes possible. They deserve no less.”
MossRehab has been designated a Model System of Care by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research.
As part of the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, MossRehab has two main facilities ─ MossRehab at Elkins Park at 60 East
Township Line Road in Elkins Park, PA, and MossRehab at 1200 West Tabor Road in Philadelphia. It also operates inpatient
