High School Students Enjoy Tennis, Prevent Diabetes
Philadelphia, PA, January 8, 2008 –
Shown are high school students playing tennis at Althea Gibson Tennis & Education Center as part of a program that focuses
on educating students about diabetes and how physical activity promotes health. The pilot program, which started this fall,
is a partnership of New Media Technology Charter School, Einstein Center for Urban Health Policy & Research, Black Women in
Sport Foundation, Philadelphia Tennis Club, Temple University, The Black Tennis Foundation of Philadelphia and Sisters in
Shape. Twenty eleventh graders from New Media Technology Charter School are participating in the program to learn about diabetes
through active learning projects and by participating in physical activity programs which expose them to tennis and fitness
training.
