
Albert Einstein Healthcare Network’s Graduate Education Committee has established a uniform policy for the recruitment and
appointment of residents to all Albert Einstein Medical Center training programs. This policy applies to all applicants to
Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), Commission on Dental
Accreditation (CODA), Council on Podiatric Medicine (CPME) and Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician
Assistants (ARC-PA) accredited residency programs sponsored by Albert Einstein Healthcare Network.

Eligibility Requirements for Residency Training
Albert Einstein Healthcare Network is committed to its mission as a major academic medical center – delivering excellent patient
care that is strongly supported and augmented by multidimensional teaching and research programs. As such, Einstein is committed
to the education and training of physicians through its residency programs and to the recruitment of well-qualified applicants.
Medical Residency Programs
Incoming Resident at PGY-1 Level
In order to be eligible for appointment to an ACGME and/or AOA accredited Einstein residency training program, an applicant
must possess one of the following qualifications:
- Graduate of an Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school in the United States or Canada who
has passed USMLE Step 1
- Graduate of an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited college of osteopathic medicine in the United States who
has passed either USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Step 1
- Graduate of a medical school outside the United States and Canada who meets one of the following qualifications:
- A currently valid certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (which includes passage of USMLE
Steps 1 and 2 and Clinical Skills Assessment certification)
- A full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
- Graduate of a medical school outside the United States who has completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited
medical school
In addition, applicants must meet all Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine training licensure requirements for entrance into
an Einstein residency program.
Applicants that do not possess one of the above stated qualifications will be considered non-eligible for enrollment in an
Einstein sponsored residency program.
Dental Residency Programs
In order to be eligible for appointment to an CODA accredited Einstein dental residency training program, an applicant must
possess one of the following qualifications:
- Graduate of an institution in the United States that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
- Graduate of an institution in Canada accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada
- Graduate of an institution outside the United States and Canada who possesses equivalent educational background and standing
as determined by the institution and program.
- Advanced placement or credit by examination will only be granted by the institution in accordance with Commission on Dental
Accreditation policies
In addition, Dental residents not licensed by the State Board of Dentistry must comply with the notification of training requirements
as stipulated by the Dental Board.
Applicants that do not possess one of the above stated qualifications will be considered non-eligible for enrollment in an
Einstein sponsored dental residency program.
Podiatry Residency Program
In order to be eligible for appointment to an CPME accredited Einstein dental residency training program, an applicant must
possess the following qualification:
- Graduate of an institution in the United States that is accredited by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME).
In addition, Podiatry residents must meet all Pennsylvania State Board of Podiatry licensure requirements for entrance into
the Einstein residency program.
Applicants that do not possess the above stated qualifications will be considered non-eligible for enrollment in the Einstein
sponsored podiatry residency program.
Physician Assistant Residency Programs
In order to be eligible for appointment to an Einstein Physician Assistant residency training program, an applicant must possess
the following qualifications:
- Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program in the United States.
- National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Board eligible or certified.
In addition, Dental residents not licensed by the State Board of Dentistry must comply with the notification of training requirements
as stipulated by the Dental Board.
Applicants that do not possess one of the above stated qualifications will be considered non-eligible for enrollment in an
Einstein sponsored dental residency program.
International Applicants
Physicians who are not US citizens, must possess an appropriate work visa (J-1, H-1, O-1, or F1 clinical base year), valid
work permit or permanent residence status (green card). Applicants should discuss sponsorship of an appropriate work visa
with the Residency Program Director at the time of interview. Applicants that Match to Albert Einstein Healthcare Network
for residency are responsible for obtaining the appropriate work visa or authorization.

Resident Selection
Individual Residency Program Requirements
Each program director shall have a graduate medical advisory committee for the ranking and selection of applicants to its
graduate medical education program. This committee will oversee the review of applications, the interview process and Match
rank order lists.
Each residency program will maintain a written statement on resident selection including the application process (documents
required), interview criteria and interview process. Specific criteria related to the level of academic preparedness and clinical
skills appropriate to each discipline will be left to the judgement and discretion of the respective Program Director and/or
advisory committee. Criteria may include but is not limited to ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communications skills,
and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.
Resident Matching Programs
Albert Einstein Medial Center strongly encourages each of its sponsored programs to participate in all applicable national
matching programs including the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), the AOA Intern Registration Program (IRP) and the
Post-Doctoral Dental Matching Program. The Office of Academic and Alumni Affairs is responsible for ensuring that programs
enroll and participate as expected.
