Hepatology - Program Info

Hepatology fellows will acquire expertise in performing consultations primarily focusing on the liver. The fellow will be expected to create a plan for pertinent diagnostic studies and laboratory tests, and to formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis. Additionally, the fellow will acquire knowledge of the indications for liver biopsy and in endoscopic variceal ligation. The fellow is expected to develop competencies in the evaluation and referral of patients with liver disease for liver transplantation and in the management of their post-transplant care, including transplant rejection. The Albert Einstein Hepatology Fellowship is a non-accredited program.

Fellows on the inpatient service will be exposed to a full range of clinical disorders across a diverse mix of patients with emphasis on evaluation and management of diseases of the liver.  The fellow will be expected to evaluate and participate in the ongoing care of inpatients on the hepatology service as well as teaching service consultations from other departments such as Surgery, OB-GYN, etc.  Typically, the fellow will see two to four new admissions per day and follow 8 –10 patients.  Medical residents rotating on the consultation service will share in the workload.  The fellow will provide initial supervision of the medical resident, and make work rounds with the medical resident daily.  The workload on the service is sufficient to provide adequate volume for both the fellow, resident, and students.
