    Geriatric Fellowship

The one-year ACGME accredited Geriatric Fellowship endeavors to create an educational environment to train competent and caring practitioners of geriatric psychiatry, and to promote mental health care in Philadelphia by way of improved practitioners, care systems, and systems interactions. The fellowship rotations include Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry, Nursing Home Consultation, General Hospital Consultation, Group Therapy, Research, and the Long Term Structured Residence, a unit that cares for patients who are chronically and persistently mentally ill. Fellows gain experience in diagnosis, medication use, and behavioral techniques that address the needs of the geriatric population.

    Curriculum Research Requirements

The critical reading of scientific articles, research methodologies and statistical techniques are presented in a series of seminars throughout training.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the hospital's highly active clinical trials research program. This program has conducted over 40 CNS clinical trials in the past ten years. The project team members are highly experienced clinical researchers who have taken a leading role in the testing of new compounds for the treatment of schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression and anorexia nervosa. A statistician is available on site to assist with research design and analysis of data. Residents are encouraged and supported in preparing posters for regional and national presentations, and a number of residents have been awarded prizes for their work.
