Dr. Cohen is a graduate of Cornell University Medical College, Ithaca, NY where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed two years of a medical residency prior to completing residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. After time spent in the U.S. Air Force as a Major stationed at David Grant Medical Center in California, Dr. Cohen returned to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to complete his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. Dr. Cohen is board certified in obstetrics/gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, and has special interests in medical complications of pregnancy, diabetes in pregnancy and prematurity prevention. He also has special expertise in managed care, electronic medical record systems and medical liability issues.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cohen has held various leadership positions. He served as Chairman, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia; Director, Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; and Corporate Medical Director of Women’s Health at U.S. Healthcare, later Aetna Inc., Blue Bell, PA. In this role, he was responsible for program development and implementation, contracting, and coverage policies relating to all of women’s health. In 2002, Dr. Cohen returned to Einstein Medical Center as Chairman and Residency Program Director. He also serves on the Board of Overseers of the Einstein Healthcare Network.
Dr. Cohen is presently a Board Member of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and the Coalition and Center for Ethical Medical Testimony and Vice President of the Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia. He has served as President of the Philadelphia Perinatal Society, President of the Pennsylvania Perinatal Association, Chairman of Pennsylvania section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Chairman of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists Committee on Course Coordination. Dr. Cohen has been and continues to be a reviewer for many journals, including Obstetrics & Gynecology, American Journal of Obstetricsand Gynecology and the New England Journal of Medicine. He has authored more than 100 articles and abstracts and has contributed to many texts in the field. Dr. Cohen has lectured nationally and internationally on high risk obstetric topics as well as issues relating to the business of medicine. He has served on many local, state and national committees relating to obstetrical care of undeserved populations and perinatal care.
