Prior to joining Einstein as Vice Chairman of OB/GYN, Dr. Jay Goldberg was Professor of OB/GYN and Director of the Division of General OB/GYN at Jefferson Medical College. He was additionally the Director/Founder of the Jefferson Fibroid Center.
Dr. Goldberg received an Honors Degree in Biology from Penn State. He then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed a residency in OB/GYN at Magee-Womens Hospital / University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Goldberg also earned a NIH Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology and Human Investigation.
Dr. Goldberg’s specific interest in uterine fibroids is very personal. Soon after finishing his residency, his wife developed several large fibroids, causing heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary frequency, and the loss of multiple pregnancies. While deciding between no treatment or myomectomy, a new procedure, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), also became an option. Mrs. Goldberg ultimately underwent a myomectomy. Their oldest of three healthy boys was conceived six weeks post-op.
Due to the absence of data regarding UFE that had been available while making their fertility decision, Dr. Goldberg then soon published the first series in the world literature of pregnancies following UFE. Since that article, Dr. Goldberg has authored over 75 peer reviewed articles, published abstracts, and presentations at national and international meetings, primarily on uterine fibroids. He has also given numerous invited fibroid lectures nationally and internationally.
In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Goldberg has one of the largest clinical fibroid practices. Patients are individually evaluated and presented with all appropriate treatment options, including observation only, medical treatment, UFE, and surgical options. Jay Goldberg, MD, MSCP, has performed over 1,500 fibroid related surgeries. Many of these procedures are performed through the minimally invasive Goldberg Mini-Lap surgical technique that he has developed.
