Einstein Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry offers a general psychiatry training program designed to prepare residents for the broad practice of psychiatry. The four-year, ACGME -certified program accepts eight to ten qualified residents each year. The staff-to-resident ratio is high, and individual clinical supervision is emphasized to enhance education and clinical acumen. Rotations are carefully coordinated between Einstein Medical Center and Germantown Crisis Response Center.
Resident psychiatrists enjoy balanced exposure to psychotherapy and psychopharmacology through a variety of subspecialty rotations including consultation & liaison, substance use disorders, eating disorders, affective disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, geriatric psychiatry, emergency psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry. Both primary clinical sites offer residents training in administration of electroconvulsive therapy as a treatment modality.
Psychoanalytic training begins in the first year, with Einstein’s unique seminar developed by Dr. Harold Kolansky and supported by contributions from scholarly analysts who visit regularly for case presentation and collaborative discussion on psychoanalytic theory. Additionally, residents enjoy the opportunity to formulate and present their own cases for psychoanalytic interpretation during regular evening gatherings at the home of Dr. Kolansky, receiving feedback and input from both peers and visiting analysts.
These features, combined with Einstein’s friendly and flexible atmosphere, enable residents to create a personalized curriculum that reflects their individual interests. Einstein graduates have graduated to competitive fellowships representing every subspecialty of psychiatry, engage in clinical research at the nation’s leading academic centers, and frequently elect to remain on faculty within the Einstein Healthcare Network.
