Emergency Medicine - Program Info

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Einstein Medical Center provides residents with an exceptional opportunity to train in an urban environment where the spectrum of illnesses is vast and the acuity is intense. As an Emergency Medicine resident, you will be part of the team that cares for more than 90,000 patients a year, including more than 1,100 major trauma patients. As one of the regions largest tertiary care facilities, Einstein Medical Center offers the opportunity for acquiring the distinct training needed to care for the vast spectrum of illnesses encountered in the emergency department setting. Serving both urban and suburban communities with virtually every ethnic and socioeconomic group assures clinical variety and continual challenge.

Einstein Medical Center is the busiest Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center in Philadelphia, providing high-level trauma care to a broad spectrum of patients with penetrating and blunt trauma. The renovated and expanded Emergency Department is one of the largest and most sophisticated in the region and includes digital radiography, CT scanning in the ED, emergency ultrasound, sonographic passive patient tracking, bedside testing, electronic records and many other state-of-the-art systems to assist the resident’s training and enhance patient care. While the ED is an urban training environment, the department operates like a well-run community hospital and achieves published patient satisfaction scores at the top of our peer group.

Einstein Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program is dually accredited by both the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association. Forty board-certified faculty members demonstrate an unsurpassed commitment to resident education and clinical research. Many of the faculty has additional training in Emergency Medical Services, Special Operations Medicine, Disaster Management, Emergency Ultrasound, and Toxicology, and several are nationally recognized experts in Resident Education, Pain Management, Conscious Sedation, and EM Quality Assurance.

Our first time Board certification pass rate has been 100% for many years for the written, and 97% for the oral exams. The graduates of our program are well trained for careers in either academic or community emergency medicine, and many have gone on to fellowship training and administrative roles.

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program currently holds maximum five-year accreditation status from the ACGME-RRC and is approved for the training of a total of 60 residents in the four year program.

About Our Faculty

The commitment demonstrated by the 20 full-time, board-certified attending physicians is unsurpassed. In addition to their dedication to educating residents, faculty serve as committee members, speakers, and leaders in societies such as the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) – including past Pennsylvania Chapter President – Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP), Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Medicine ( PaACEP).

All of the attendings hold academic faculty positions at the affiliated colleges. Through lectures and clinical training, residents develop a practice style shaped by the faculty's expertise in airway management, pediatric emergency medicine and trauma resuscitations. Faculty members become mentors of small resident groups, and senior residents assist in being mentors for their fellow junior residents, promoting camaraderie.
