The two-year fellowship in Medical Toxicology recently received ACGME maximum number of years continued accreditation and offers a wide range of training experiences. The fellowship focuses on the clinical care of poisoned patients, on education, and on research.
The Division of Medical Toxicology is the largest faculty of full time residency trained emergency medicine physicians with specialty fellowship training in the city of Philadelphia. Members of the division exemplify diversity in their training and practice interests. Each have published extensively in emergency medicine and toxicology literature and are nationally recognized speakers and lecturers. The Toxicology division has an active research program and now offers both inpatient and outpatient toxicology consultation services with an emphasis on bedside teaching of the care and management of poisoned patients. Emergency medicine residents spend one month during the PGY-3 year rotating on the toxicology service, receiving daily lectures and participating in the activities of the Regional Poison Control Center in Philadelphia.
The Division of Toxicology has a busy inpatient consultation service, a 23-hour Observation Unit, and an outpatient toxicology clinic. There is a breadth of clinical exposure including acute overdoses, chronic poisonings, and occupational/environmental medicine. In affiliation with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the fellow will also have an integrated pediatric experience.
The fellow will have ample opportunity to develop as an educator. The division offers rotations in medical toxicology to residents and medical students. We emphasize bedside teaching during inpatient rounds and poison center case reviews with the rotators. Daily lectures are given to the rotators as well as formal lectures to other programs throughout the region. The fellow will be integrated into these educational sessions under the mentorship of the faculty.
The fellow will become a competent consumer of the medical literature with the eventual goal of meaningful contribution to the medical literature. The Division has a well-developed research mechanism including research assistants and coordinators and animal laboratory space. The faculty has published many peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters and have several ongoing research projects. The fellow will receive formal training in research methodology as well as guidance in his/her own projects.
