Dr. Ortiz joined our program in July 2001 as an attending surgeon and during the course of the next four years he became the Section Chief for the Pancreas Transplant Program. He resigned in June 2004 and returned in July 2008 to take the position of Program Director.
Dr. Ortiz completed the General Surgery Residency Program at North Shore University Hospital in New York, NY from 1991-1996. Following the completion of his residency he completed an Organ Transplant Fellowship at University of Miami Medical Center from 1996 – 1998 following which he joined the staff in the Division of Transplantation at UC Irvine Medical Center at the University of California and was appointed Director, Renal Transplant Program from 1998-2000 when he left to join the medical staff at Einstein.
Dr. Ortiz is a board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Welcome to Einstein Medical Center’s Kidney Transplant Fellowship Program web site. Administratively, the Division of Transplantation operates under the umbrella of the Department of Surgery. I became the Chairman of the Division of Transplantation effective January 1, 2008 after holding the position of Section Chief of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and Director of the Center for Renal Disease since July 1, 2002.
The Kidney Transplant Program began in 1964. The Kidney Transplant Fellowship was approved in 1990 by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). Fellowship training is constantly a key component of this transplant program. We have built what we believe to be a premier training program, adhering to ASTS guidelines.
Dr. Zaki came to Einstein Medical Center from St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Transplant Program in New York, NY where he served as a multi-organ transplant attending for two years prior to joining the medical staff at Einstein. He completed his surgical residency at New York Medical College, Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester in New Rochelle, NY and completed a Multiorgan Transplant Fellowship here at Einstein .
