Eculizumab injection

What is Eculizumab injection?

ECULIZUMAB is a monoclonal antibody. It is used to treat paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. This medicine works by blocking part of your immune system. It should help decrease the number of blood transfusions you need and the number of attacks of blood in the urine.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• fever

• infection

• are not up to date on your vaccinations

• have not received the meningococcal vaccination

• an unusual or allergic reaction to eculizumab, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

This medicine is given into your vein by a health care provider in a clinic or hospital. A special MedGuide will be given to you by your health care provider before you receive each dose of medicine. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply.

What drug(s) may interact with Eculizumab?

Interactions are not expected.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking Eculizumab?

This medicine increases your risk of getting infections such as meningitis. You should know the signs and symptoms of meningitis. If you do not know the signs and symptoms of meningitis, ask your health care provider to explain them to you. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms. Do not start taking this medicine until you have received the meningococcal vaccine.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Eculizumab?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

• chest pain

• confusion

• difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

• eyes that are sensitive to the light

• fever

• hives

• moderate to severe headache

• nausea and vomiting

• rash

• severe muscle aches

• stiff neck or back

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• constipation

• fatigue

• runny nose or colds

Where can I keep my medicine?

This does not apply. This medicine will be given to you in a hospital or clinic.
