Meet the Program Director

Merle A. Carter, MD

Dr. Carter is the Residency Director for Emergency Medicine. She is an American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Teaching Fellowship graduate, a graduate of the ACEP/Emergency Medicine Foundation Research Skills program, and currently serves as Mentor for the ACEP Teaching Fellowship. Dr. Carter has served several terms as an elected member of the AEHN Medical Staff Board, an appointed Member of the Network Transformation Steering Committee, a Member of the Mission-Driven Leadership Committee, a Member of the Emergency Mid-Level Provider Steering Committee, in addition to her role on the Chaplaincy & Pastoral Education and Graduate Education Committees. She is active in Pennsylvania Chapter of ACEP, serving on the Education Committee and as Oral Board Review Course Faculty. Appointed to represent ACEP nationally, she is a member of the task force to revise the Model of Clinical Practice in Emergency Medicine, the core content document used by EM programs to drive their didactic and clinical curricula. She has presented nationally at ACOEP and ACEP conferences and regionally for SAEM. Dr. Carter has won the Medical Student Teacher of the Year Award several years in a row, has media appearances on behalf of the Einstein Network and PA-ACEP, and has been the recipient of the Medical Center’s prestigious Employee Recognition Award. Prior to assuming the role of Program Director, Dr. Carter was an Associate Program Director, and served as the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and Clerkship Director.

Maria Halluska-Handy, MD

Dr. Maria Halluska-Handy is an Assistant Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Handy has a faculty appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University and serves on the Resident Competency and Promotion Committee. She is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. She served as the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for three years.

Academic and Clinical Interests: Emergency ultrasound (Certified Level III Emergency Ultrasonographer)

Ishrat Khatri, MD

Dr. Khatri is Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine and serves on the Resident Competency and Promotion Committee.

Deborah Pierce, DO

Dr. Pierce is an Assistant Director-Emergency Medicine Residency Program and serves on the Resident Competency and Promotion Committee. Her clinical and academic interests include resident and medical student education, emergency ultrasound (certified Level III emergency ultrasonographer), women in medicine, and Ob/Gyn emergencies.

Jordan Spector, MD, MS

Dr. Jordan Spector is an assistant Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Spector serves on the Resident Competency and Promotion Committee, and his clinical and academic interests include medical student and resident education, use of ultrasonography in the emergency department and difficult airway management.

Lynn Scherer, PA-C

Lynn Scherer, PA-C is the Director of the Physician Assistant Emergency Medicine Residency Program and the Physician Assistant Clinical Manager of the Emergency Medicine Department. Lynn is actively involved with the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants and has held a position on their Board of Directors for the past three years. Lynn's clinical and academic interests include physician assistant education, patient education, and actively advancing the knowledge and function of physician assistants within the emergency medicine specialty in delivering excellent patient care.

JoAnn Corbi

JoAnn Corbi is the Residency Program Administrator for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education programs within the Department of Emergency Medicine. Working with the Program Director and Assistant Program Directors in planning and development of policies and procedures relating to the educational programs and ensuring compliance with all external review agencies. JoAnn has eighteen years of healthcare administration and graduate medical education, and previously corporate human resources experience.

  

Kelli O'Donnell

Kelli O'Donnell is the Residency Coordinator for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, a position she has held for more than 18 years. She is a recent graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, obtaining her Master's Degree in Forensic Medicine. She is the past Co-Chair of the Website Development Committee and has served on the Nominations Committee and the Professional Development Committee of the Emergency Medicine Association of Residency Coordinators. She has worked with two of our attending physicians on criminal poisoning chapters, which were submitted for publication. She is a volunteer for the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania.

Ms. O'Donnell is recognized as an expert in residency administration and residency database management.
