Program Information
As an Emergency medicine resident, you will be part of the team that cares for more than 85,000 patients a year, including
more than 1,100 major trauma patients. As one of the area's largest tertiary care facilities, Einstein Medical Center offers
the opportunity for acquiring the distinct training needed to care for the vast spectrum of illnesses encountered in the emergency
department setting. Serving both urban and suburban communities with virtually every ethnic and socioeconomic group assures
clinical variety and continual challenge.
This longstanding, well-established residency program is dedicated to bringing breadth and depth to emergency medicine education.
The Residency Review Committee has approved this program for the training of 60 residents and was granted full five-year accreditation
status during our last site visit in 2006. Since 1980, the well-balanced, intensive curriculum has been fine tuned to maximize
the learning of both the knowledge and skills necessary to practice Emergency Medicine. The Einstein Emergency Medicine Residency
Program is affiliated with two medical schools: Jefferson Medical College and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The Department of Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine recently unveiled a new Emergency Department, expanded to 42 beds, a three-bed trauma
resuscitation room, and a six-bed 'fast track' area. Sophisticated medical equipment and medical informatics help in providing
advanced emergency care. Einstein Medical Center's superbly equipped, fully computerized laboratories enhance efficient patient
care and research capabilities. 'Point of care' testing brings immediate laboratory results to the bedside for the rapid
diagnoses of myocardial infarction and trauma.
The Department of Emergency Medicine features optical imaging of updated medical records visualized on screen in the department.
Also, stored files of EKGs from the Division of Cardiology are available by on-screen computer graphs. PACS Digital Radiology
Systems allow X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds to be viewed from any computer station in the department. All plain radiographs
are performed and interpreted in the department. Virtually any radiographic study is available 24 hours a day. Einstein Medical
Center serves as a Base Station Command for Philadelphia's paramedics, as well as volunteer and private ambulance services.
Emergency physicians provide on-line medical communication and pre-hospital intervention through Philadelphia's paramedics
in the field. Your training will include certification as a medical command physician.
The training of residents, occurring primarily at Albert Einstein Medical Center, is further complemented by rotations at
distinguished regional centers including: The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (pediatric intensive care unit/pediatric emergency medicine), Lehigh Valley Hospital Center (neurosurgery/shock trauma unit), Delaware Valley Regional Poison Control Center (toxicology), and Temple University Hospital
Burn Center (surgical critical care/burns).
