Harvey® and The SimulScope®

The Department of Medicine has Harvey®, the cardiology patient simulator. Having this extraordinary teaching tool for the cardiovascular physical exam places Einstein in a group of elite training programs. Harvey aids learning by simulating the bedside findings of a normal cardiovascular exam and over 20 abnormal cardiovascular disorders. Blood pressure, jugular venous wave forms, arterial pulses, precordial movements, heart sounds, and respiration can be studied to give the learner a complete understanding of the cardiovascular examination. We also have the UMedic® computer assisted interactive instruction system in cardiovascular physical diagnosis that residents can use to compliment the learning experience with Harvey.

The SimulScope® is used for teaching heart, breath and bowel sounds. A stethoscope with a wireless infrared transmitter can pick up heart, breath or bowel sounds and transmit them to wireless infrared headphones worn by a number of different listeners. The SimulScope® allows our residents to all hear the same sounds at the same time, which facilitates the instruction of physical diagnosis.

SimMan®

This simulator provides an experience which will challenge and test residents’ clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient-care scenarios. This simulator is very realistic, and affords residents the opportunity to learn and practice airway skills, intravenous access techniques, tube thorocostomy, bladder catheterization and nasogastric tube placement. "Mock Code" training is provided for residents on this life-like patient simulator. All aspects of ACLS can be learned and practiced on SimMan.

AccuTouch® Endoscopy Simulator

Residents and fellows have the opportunity to learn hands-on about endoscopic procedures with our endoscopy simulator. Modules on upper and lower endoscopy (including ERCP), bronchoscopy and airway management are available. This simulator is a realistic, computer-based system which allows residents and fellows the opportunity to master both the motor and cognitive skills necessary to perform these advanced procedures. The simulator uses real-time computer graphics, including anatomic models developed from actual patient data and a robotic interface device, where force is transmitted through a flexible scope to provide tactile sensations mimicking the actual feel of a procedure.

CathSim Vascular Access Simulator®

Residents and medical students have the opportunity to master the techniques of intravenous line insertion and phlebotomy with our vascular access simulator. CathSim provides cognitive and motor skills training into an integrated learning experience which can greatly benefit each individual learner. This simulator provides a variety of patient types which are encountered in real life and even creates complications. With this simulator, the learner is able to feel the needle and catheter insertion from the "pop" as the needle enters into the vein lumen. Also included in this module is the ability to learn and practice PICC line insertion.

VentAid TTL®

Teaching the principles and practice of mechanical ventilation is easy with use of this training test lung. Residents have an opportunity to work directly with a mechanical ventilator and the training test lung. This module allows residents to directly understand and visualize the different modes of mechanical ventilation. Residents can develop a better understanding of ventilator alarms and complications by utilizing this excellent teaching tool.
