The curriculum of the osteopathic rotating internship includes a minimum of 16 weeks rotating in internal medicine, family medicine and emergency medicine. 

Emergency Medicine

Einstein Medical Center's Department of Emergency Medicine treats more than 70,000 patients annually, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in Philadelphia.  Osteopathic interns have contact with a wide variety of patients insuring a broad range of experience.  The newly renovated emergency department houses 41 treatment rooms including 3 trauma beds, 10 intensive care beds, 2 respiratory isolation beds, 2 orthopaedic beds, 10 fast-track beds and 24 general treatment rooms.  In addition, the emergency department includes a full-service imaging suite with two general diagnostic rooms, a CT scan suite and a contamination area.

Family Medicine

The core experience in family practice will be provided by a four week ambulatory rotation in a general practice office.  This experience will take place under the supervision and guidance of a board-certified family practitioner that is an osteopathic physician.  Only one resident at a time will be permitted on this rotation, which emphasizes the principles and practice of family medicine.  Interns participate in a full spectrum of activities in a busy office setting and develop the clinical, interpersonal and managerial skills essential for success in outpatient practice. 

Internal Medicine

General medicine services are organized by firm and are geographic.  Each firm consists of two inpatient teams, and each team includes one to two medical students, two interns, one to two senior residents and a full-time teaching attending.  Interns on the general medical service have primary responsibility for six to ten patients and receive close supervision and substantial teachings.  A full time faculty member supervises patient care activities on each team and conducts bedside daily teaching and management rounds. Structural exams will be performed by osteopathic interns on all new inpatients upon admission and on all new outpatients assigned to the intern in the ambulatory clinics. These exams will be documented in the patient charts. 

Included in the curriculum are supervised daily patient care activities, morning report, teaching attending rounds, curriculum conferences, Grand Rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, and a variety of other rotation specific didactic conferences.  Interns will participate in evidence-based medicine and research conferences as well as the institutional curriculum and multidisciplinary case conference series. The curriculum includes emphasis on moral, ethical, legal, social and economic issues.  All interns will participate in scholarly activity. 

Core Rotations and Electives

An additional 24 weeks of training must be spent on core rotations within internal  medicine,  pediatrics,  surgery and  obstetrics/gynecology. Interns will select these additional core rotations based on the categorical program requirements of their program of choice.  The remaining two months of the curriculum are elective and may be non-core rotations but again will be determined by the program requirements of the categorical program the intern plans to enter.

The intern's year will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual while fulfilling all the requirements of the osteopathic rotating internship and the PGY-1 requirements of the categorical residency program of choice.
