The Albert Einstein Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine treats more than 60,000 patients annually, making it one
of the busiest emergency departments in Philadelphia. The emergency room was renovated in 2003, making it a state-of-the-art
facility. During the PGY-1 year, Medicine-Pediatrics residents have contact with a wide variety of patients, with emergency
room rotations in both the Internal Medicine and Pediatric blocks.
Experience in the management of pediatric emergencies is gained both in the emergency unit as well as in the Community Practice
Center, where acutely ill but stable children are also seen. Senior level Medicine-Pediatrics residents as well as Pediatric
residents make decisions regarding pediatric admissions in both settings.
In the PGY-3 or PGY-4 year, a Medicine-Pediatrics resident spends one month as the medical admitting resident, evaluating
patients referred for admission. The admitting resident works closely with a nurse facilitator to ensure prompt assignment
of patients to the appropriate firm.
