Night Call
Medicine
On the general medicine service and medical and coronary intensive care units, PGY-1 residents are on call no more frequently
than every fourth night. Residents admit an average of three to five new patients per night. Admissions are capped at five
per night. Additional patients are admitted to the non-teaching service or covered by a supervising senior resident. PGY-1
Medicine-Pediatrics residents on their emergency medicine rotations, ambulatory geriatrics rotation and elective rotations
have no night call responsibilities.
Senior Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics residents cover the general medicine services with a night float system: two 2-week
rotations during the PGY-2, -3 or -4 years. Senior residents in the critical care units are on call every fourth night.
Senior residents on ambulatory care, office practice, elective and research rotations are on call an average of two to three
nights per month.
Pediatrics
On the general pediatric and critical care services, PGY-1 residents are on call every fourth night on average. During pediatric
ambulatory care and elective rotations, PGY-1 Pediatric and Medicine-Pediatrics residents are on call every fifth night.
In the PGY-2, PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, residents on critical care services are on call no more frequently than every fourth
night. During pediatric ambulatory care and elective rotations, senior residents are on call two to three nights per month in
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In addition, the Pediatrics Department has a night float system for senior residents on
the Einstein Service at St. Christopher's.
Tuition Reimbursement
The tuition reimbursement program helps Medicine-Pediatrics residents at Einstein Medical Center meet their student loan obligations.
Residents with outstanding loans receive up to $15,000 in tuition reimbursement.
Family Friendly
The Medicine-Pediatrics program encourages residents to maintain an appropriate balance in their lives. Regularly scheduled
Med-Peds outings ease the pressures of resident life, and our corporate membership in a health and racquet club makes it easy
for residents to spend time together away from the hospital.
There is a PGY-4 Med-Peds Chief Resident who helps guide and support the other Med-Peds residents. In addition, a "Med-Peds
Intern Buddy System" pairs each intern with a second-year Med-Peds resident to provide additional support and guidance.
The residency program also emphasizes the importance of family and friends. We help residents make a smooth transition from
medical school to postgraduate training, and we pay careful attention to the scheduling needs of our residents.
