Primary patient care responsibility is the hallmark of the Albert Einstein Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program.
Rotations in internal medicine, critical care, telemetry, emergency medicine and ambulatory care ensure that transitional
year residents develop competence and confidence in managing acutely ill patients.
Internal Medicine
Transitional year residents are full partners in the internal medicine firm system on general medicine. Transitional year
residents work closely with senior medical residents and share responsibility for medical student teaching. Each team is led
by a member of the full-time faculty, who supervises patient care and conducts daily teaching rounds. A typical day on the
general medicine service includes work rounds, teaching attending rounds, noon conference and a variety of procedures.
Critical Care
In the critical care units, transitional year residents gain a strong foundation in the management of patients with multisystem
organ failure and life-threatening illnesses. Daily teaching rounds and conferences supplement the outstanding clinical experience
in the critical care units.
Telemetry
Transitional year residents rotating on the telemetry service will gain a strong foundation in the care of patients with a
multitude of different cardiac and other medical illnesses. This rotation gives residents the opportunity to interact with
a variety of health-care professionals to provide high quality care. The goal of this rotation is to help the transitional
year resident develop the knowledge base, interactive skills, technical skills, and learning attitudes to provide high-level
care to adult patients with the most common forms of heart disease.
Emergency Medicine

The Albert Einstein Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine is a Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with an active
helicopter transport program. The emergency department treats more than 85,000 patients annually and is the busiest in Philadelphia.
During the emergency medicine rotation transitional year residents have first-line contact with a wide variety of patients
and are ensured a broad range of experience.
Ambulatory Care
The ambulatory care rotation offers transitional year residents an opportunity to gain experience in general pediatrics or
general internal medicine.
The Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center is the cornerstone of the pediatric outpatient experience. A busy practice, excellent
supervision and a full schedule of conferences ensure a valuable educational experience in ambulatory pediatrics for transitional
year residents.
Transitional year residents selecting the internal medicine ambulatory care rotation gain firsthand experience in the practice
of primary care in a community-based teaching practice.
