Challenges Treating Children with Eating Disorders

While children and adolescent patients can be easier to treat than adults who have more well-formed habits, children face their own set of issues when confronting eating disorders.

    Those include:

    • Different developmental stages
    • Confusion as younger patients’ bodies change during puberty
    • More influence from patients’ peers that may invoke eating disorders
    • Less of a developed sense of self
    • Lack of awareness of the consequences of eating disorders on younger patients’ bodies and minds

In addition, to nutritional care and therapy Einstein Healthcare Network provides children and adolescents with:

    • Educational sessions led by Pennsylvania-certified teachers
    • Adjusted medication dosages to better suit their growing bodies
    • Shared inpatient rooms with other children and adolescents of their own age and gender
    • Family involvement to ensure parents and families are involved throughout their child or adolescent’s eating disorders care.
