PHILADELPHIA (April 18, 2012) – In keeping its commitment to help educate the community about the concept of “recovery” from mental illness, Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment and the Freda Kraftsow Sacks Family Resource Center recently hosted a free screening of the documentary Kings Park, Stories From an American Mental Institution by filmmaker Lucy Winer. The documentary tells the story of Winer’s return to the abandoned institution where she was committed as a suicidal teenager in the 1960’s and includes encounters with other patients, former staff and family members, revealing the painful legacy of the state hospital system and the crisis left by its demise.
The film was followed by an audience discussion with Lucy Winer and a panel of mental health professionals including David Greenspan, MD, Chair of Department of Psychiatry, Belmont Behavioral Health, and Joanne Cipriano, Program Director, Belmont Long Term Structured Residence, as well as representatives from the Mental Health Association of Southeastern PA and the Family Resource Network.
