Einstein Healthcare Network is proud to announce the organization’s role as a founding sponsor of the Plant One Million campaign. Einstein is joining forces with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and their partners in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware in their effort to plant one million trees throughout 13 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
Plant One Million is the largest planting initiative in the country. The goal of this effort is to restore the “tree canopy cover” – the area of land shaded by trees – to 30 percent in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Measuring the area of land covered by tree canopy is an important yardstick for a healthy environment, since trees improve air and water quality and help reduce erosion, water pollution, and flooding.
“This campaign reflects our enduring commitment to the growing communities we serve,” said Barry R. Freedman, CEO and President, Einstein Healthcare Network. “Einstein has laid deep roots throughout the region and we strive to provide quality growth in the communities we serve, ultimately making them a healthier place to live.”
Einstein’s commitment to the environment is evident at the site of the organization’s new hospital, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery in East Norriton, PA. The project is being built to obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The partnership with Plant One Million further solidifies the green initiatives currently underway at this campus.
“When planning projects of this magnitude, it is imperative that we counteract the need to uproot, move or remove some trees that currently reside on the property,” said Richard Montalbano, VP and Project Executive, Einstein Healthcare Network. “The new medical center campus will feature 700 more trees than had previously resided on the property. Einstein planted more than 1,000 trees, while maintaining or relocating nearly 100 additional specimens. ”
To date, there have been more than 100,000 trees planted as a part of the Plant One Million Campaign. Einstein’s involvement will not only include the planting of new trees on campuses throughout the network but will provide financial support for the initiative.
