Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia earned re-designation as a Blue Distinction® Center for Spine Surgery and Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park earned re-designation as a Blue Distinction® Center for Knee and Hip Replacement. The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care. The program recently expanded to include additional quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety, as well as new cost-efficiency measures. Consumers, medical providers and employers rely on the Blue Distinction® program to identify hospitals delivering quality care in Knee and Hip Replacements, Spine Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Cardiac Care, Complex and Rare Cancers, and Transplants. Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park both met the rigorous selection criteria set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty care program. The selection criteria used to evaluate hospitals were developed with input from the medical community and include general quality and safety metrics plus program specific metrics. “This is another tool to help consumers make informed healthcare decisions and I’m proud that Einstein has met and exceeded the criteria for this important designation,” said Barry R. Freedman, President and Chief Executive Officer for Einstein Healthcare Network. Research shows that the newly-designated Blue Distinction® Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers® also are more than 20 percent more cost-efficient.
