  • John Handal, MD, Selected as One of 20 Spine Surgeon Leaders for Non-Profit Hospitals by Becker’s Hospital Review

    PHILADELPHIA, July 17, 2012 – John Handal, MD, Chairman and Director of the Spine Program at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, has been selected as one of twenty Spine Surgeon Leaders for Non-Profit Hospitals by Becker’s Spine Review, part of Becker's Hospital Review. Becker’s Hospital Review is a leading source of business and legal information for hospital and health system leaders. The surgeons were chosen after having been assessed by a panel of industry experts and for consistently being recognized by other industry ranking companies.

    Dr. Handal has a professional interest in performing minimally invasive spine surgery and treating patients with conditions such as scoliosis and cervical spine disorders. During his career, he spearheaded the development of the Orthopedic Bioengineering Laboratory at Korman Research Pavilion. His current research includes osteonecrosis of the hip (disease that results from loss of blood supply to the hip), chemotherapeutic bone cements, stem cell therapies for bone fracture and cartilage repair.

    Dr. Handal has also designed instrumentation for use during spine surgery. He earned his medical degree at Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and completed his residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center. His additional training includes a fellowship at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center/Penn State.
