  • Patient Wedding Prepared by Staff Garners Media Attention

    Published: 06/30/2014

On June 27, Pedro Ortiz, a 44-year-old Northeast man with severe congestive heart failure, married his fiance Shawna Hannon prior to having open heart surgery Monday, June 30, when surgeons will implant a Ventricular Assist Device to keep him alive while he waits for a heart transplant.

The wedding took place in our Heart Institute's telemetry unit thanks to our dedicated staff:

Pedro's nurses decorated the unit and created an archway for the couple to get married under and took Shawna dress shopping.

Food Services donated all the food for a 30 person reception.

Government Relations helped the couple obtain a marriage license (Pedro could not leave the hospital to apply in person) and got a judge to come to the hospital to perform the nuptials.

Marketing/Public Relations provided a photographer to capture all the important moments for the couple.

Congratulations Pedro and Shawna, and congratulations to all the staff that pulled off this incredible, meaningful event.
