As part of Einstein Healthcare Network’s role as a founding sponsor of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Plant One Million campaign, Einstein and PHS planted cherry trees at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. The tree planting took place Thursday, November 14 on Tabor Road and 11th Street, outside the Sheerr Building on the Einstein Philadelphia campus.
Since the start of the sponsorship, several tree planting events have taken place to beautify Einstein campuses, including Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park & MossRehab, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, and Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment.
“It’s wonderful to see so much support from employees for this project,” says Bruce Bashwiner, Vice President of Facilities for Einstein Healthcare Network. “Adding these beautiful new trees continues to enhance our campus for employees, patients, visitors and neighbors.”
Plant One Million is the largest planting initiative in the country. The goal of the effort is to restore the “tree canopy cover” – the area of land shaded by trees – to 30 percent in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Measuring the area of land covered by tree canopy is an important yardstick for a healthy environment, since trees improve air and water quality and help reduce erosion, water pollution, and flooding. To date, there have been more than 270,000 trees planted as part of the Plant One Million campaign. Einstein’s involvement not only includes the planting of new trees on campuses throughout the network, but also provides financial support for the initiative.
The plantings at the Einstein campus will include the use of Espoma BioTone Starter Plus, which has been donated by PHS sponsor Espoma for use in the Plant One Million campaign.
“PHS is very proud to be working with Einstein Healthcare Network on the beautification of its Philadelphia campus,” said PHS President Drew Becher. “Through its tree plantings and support for PHS, Einstein has shown its commitment to environmental concerns and the communities it serves.”
