The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s commitment to scholarly activity is reflected clearly in the opportunities,
encouragement and support provided for resident research. Residents are expected to produce at least one scholarly product
of publishable quality during the course of their residency. Residents may complete additional research during their training
and are actively supported by the training program in this endeavor as long as satisfactory performance in the residency is
maintained.
Residents engage in research by joining projects of the Ob/Gyn faculty or designing their own projects. Resident scholarly
activity is coordinated by the Director of Ob/Gyn Academic Affairs who helps prepare projects for presentation and publication.
A research specialist, Claudia Beckman, RNC, PhD, serves as consultant to the residency, helping residents and faculty to
develop their research projects and to assist with information analysis. Residents whose projects are accepted for presentation
at national or regional meetings are encouraged to attend and are sponsored by the Department of Ob/Gyn. Resident research
also is presented at various departmental conferences through the course of the academic year.
Formal instruction in computer-assisted literature searching, introduction to epidemiology and biostatistics and instruction
in critical review of the medical literature occur as part of the regular didactic curriculum. The Ob/Gyn residency training
program is especially proud of our resident achievements in scholarly activity.
