Our Division of Gynecology is taking a leadership role in clinical care and resident education in the area of minimally invasive
surgery.

1,900 Major and 2,100 Minor Surgeries Annually
Albert Einstein Medical Center's Division of Gynecology performs approximately 1,900 major and 2,100 minor surgical procedures
annually. Patients requiring general gynecologic care (annual care, health promotion and disease prevention, non-surgical
complaints, and contraception) are seen and provided care in the resident continuity care system and offices of the faculty
Patients requiring general gynecologic surgery are identified in the continuity clinics and in consultations, and are evaluated
preoperatively. When these patients need surgical care, they are then referred to the pre-operative clinic for care by the
gynecologic surgery team. Patients with urogynecologic problems and those requiring advanced laparoscopic and pelvic surgery
are also seen and evaluated by the faculty. Residents will operate with them and learn the appropriate selection of cases
and the skills necessary to perform advanced gynecologic, laparoscopic, and urogynecologic surgery.

Laparoscopic Surgical Training Laboratory
Under the leadership of Drs. David Jaspan, Philip Horn and John Myers, our laparoscopic surgical training laboratory is where
residents train one-on-one with the faculty and follow structured self-learning programs.
The laboratory includes state-of-the-art artificial reality simulation laparoscopic trainers programmed to teach basic skills
and to "walk" young surgeons through procedures and complications (just like the airline simulators used by pilots), and prototype
trainers designed by Drs. Jaspan and Myers. In addition to the active teaching program (for our residents and for residents
from other programs), the laboratory also is the center of ongoing educational research in the teaching of the psychomotor
skills of surgery ("hand-eye" skills) in partnership with Dr. Charles RB Beckmann.

Resident Procedural Experience
A comparison of our procedural statistics with national data shows Albert Einstein to be well above the 80th percentile in
almost all categories.
