Mission
The basic educational goals of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program are:
- To foster a life long pattern of independent learning, inquiry, and self-evaluation in each and every resident.
- To insure mastery of the basic knowledge, skills, and professional behavior necessary of an obstetrician-gynecologist
- To prepare each resident to pass the written and oral board examinations.

Commitment to Professionalism
Preparation for a career in obstetrics and gynecology demands the acquisition of a large fund of knowledge and a host of special
clinical skills. It also demands the strengthening of professional behaviors and attitudes that ultimately sustain a healthcare
provider throughout his/her career and enhance the doctor/patient relationship. Albert Einstein Medical Center holds residents
to the highest standards of professional and ethical behavior. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is committed
to helping each resident transition to professional life and expects all residents to live by the basic attributes of professionalism
which include:
- Adhering to high ethical and moral standards
- Subordinating our own interests to the interests of our patients
- Exercising accountability for ourselves and our colleagues
- Demonstrating a continuing commitment to scholarship and self evaluation
- Reflecting upon one’s actions and decisions, and the consequences thereof

Curriculum
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is structured to provide a comprehensive core curriculum in obstetrics and
gynecology and its subspecialties. This is accomplished through supervised daily patient care activities as well as high-quality
didactic and simulation educational experiences.
Rotations by PGY Year
Almost all rotations are structured in six-week blocks designed to maximize learning.

Duty Hours
Starting in the 2003-2004 academic year, restrictions on the hours resident physicians may work were imposed by the ACGME
for graduate medical education in the United States, and with respect to Ob/Gyn, determined by the Residency Review Committee
for Ob/Gyn. Albert Einstein Medical Center and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are in full compliance with duty
hour restrictions and insure that:
- Call is scheduled no more than every third night, averaged over four weeks
- One (24-hour) day in seven is free of patient care, averaged over four weeks
- Duty hours are limited to 80 hours per week, averaged over four weeks
- 24-hour limit on continuous duty with up to additional 6 hours for transfer, debriefing, didactic activities and continuity
clinics
- 10-hour minimum rest between duty periods
To accomplish this requirement, the AEMC Ob/Gyn department restructured its clinical rotations, condensed and augmented its
didactic program to include a core 4 hours of protected conference time per week plus morning report and selected episodic
learning experiences, and instituted a night float system. In addition, the institution provided the department with added
nurse practioners and physician assistants to supplement physician and resident care for our patients. The average work week
for an Ob/Gyn resident is not 70-75 hours when averaged over a four week period.

On Call Coverage
Day schedules are separated into the obstetric and gynecologic/gyn oncology teams who care for inpatients, go to the operating
rooms and cover consultations and specialty clinics. The night team consists of a senior resident and 3-4 junior residents
who divide the various patient care responsibilities according to clinical need. Fridays and Saturdays are the only two days
where residents are scheduled for a 24 hour shift.
