Clinical Curriculum
The clinical curriculum is based in the resident clinical rotations:
PGY I
PGY II
PY III
PGY IV (Senior Resident - Manages Services with Attending Staff)
Obstetrics / Maternal Fetal Medicine
Normal Obstetrics
Patients undergoing a normal pregnancy receive prenatal care in the resident continuity clinics and offices of the faculty.
They deliver in the labor and delivery unit by the OB resident team with regular supervision by assigned general OBGYN attending
faculty. MFM faculty are immediate available for consultation.
High-Risk Obstetrics
Patients classified as high-risk receive care in the MFM - high-risk obstetrics clinics by the OB and MFM residents under
the supervision of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Faculty. They deliver in the labor and delivery area under the care of the
OB team with general and MFM faculty supervision.
Antepartum Testing Unit
The Antepartum Testing Unit (ultrasound, MFM consultation, antepartum testing) staffed by specialty-trained nurses, technicians
and board certified Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists. OB residents participate in the unit performing obstetric ultrasonography
and evaluations of fetal well being, as well as general and genetic amniocentesis and other invasive procedures.
Gynecology / Gynecologic Oncology
Gynecology
Patients requiring general gynecologic care (annual care, health promotion and disease prevention, non-surgical complaints,
and contraception) are seen and provided care in the continuity care system and offices of the faculty.
Patients requiring general gynecologic surgery are identified in the continuity clinics and in consultations, and are evaluated
preoperatively. When these patients need surgical care, they are then referred to the pre-operative clinic for care by the
gynecologic surgery team.
Patients with urogynecologic problems and those requiring advanced laparoscopic and pelvic surgery are see by Drs. Paul Lee
and David Jaspan. Residents will operate with then and learn the appropriate selection of cases and the skills necessary to
perform advanced gynecologic, laparoscopic, and urogynecologic surgery. In addition, Dr. Lee also has special expertise in
the treatment of patients with pelvic floor disorders, both vaginally and through the laparoscope.
Gynecologic Oncology
In the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at AEMC residents participate in the evaluation and surgical, medical, and radiation
therapy of patients referred to the division from private physicians and from the resident office. During the rotation, residents
participate in the full range of surgical oncology procedures and the complex pre- and postoperative care of these patients,
including co management with intensivists when these patients require intensive care.
Third year residents rotate in the Gynecologic Oncology Division of the Fox Chase Cancer Center, where they participate in
the evaluation and surgical, medical, and radiation therapy of patients referred to the center. They also participate in the
full range of surgical gynecology procedures and the associated pre- and postoperative care. Fox Chase Cancer Center provides
additional experience in gynecologic oncology and gynecologic surgery in the setting of a hospital devoted to oncology, where
learning is accomplished in a interdisciplinary model involving gynecologic and surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation
therapy, as well as replete social services and supports including hospice and end of life care. Our residents operate regularly
with gynecologic oncologists, but also have opportunity to work with the surgical oncology group in the operating room and
with medical and radiation therapy members of the care team.
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Albert Einstein Medical Center’s OBGYN Department has partnered with a private group of Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologists
who comprise our faculty in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. This group sees over 1200 new infertility and endocrine
patients a year, does over 500 laparoscopic and abdominal surgeries a year and performs IVF on 500 patients per year. The
group is one of the only Infertility groups in the area offering preimplantation genetic diagnosis. The three members of the
group are all sub-board certified, one an MD-PhD, and all hold academic faculty positions and are active academically. One
of these faculty serves as our Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
A PGY II rotates through this practice on a full time basis for 12 weeks (continuous or in two 6-week blocks) and is exposed
to all patients and participates in the care this practice renders to this group of patients in the outpatient office and
surgical setting.
Geriatrics / Internal Medicine
In the PGYI year residents spend one month on an internal medicine unit where the multidisciplinary care of older patients
is emphasized, thus gaining the knowledge and skills of "geriatric" care in the rigorous context of an academic internal medicine
service.
Medical Intensive Care
PGY I residents spend one month as a member of the MICU team, fully participating in the evaluation and management of crucially
ill patients, including the management of ventilator dependent patients, the passing and use of central lines, and so forth.
Breast Disease
A member of the gynecology/gynecologic surgery team will rotate in a special breast disease sub-rotation with Dr. Lisa Jablon
of the Department of Surgery. Residents spend 1/2 day in her consultative breast clinic where they see benign and malignant
breast disease and 1/2 day in her outpatient operating room. In these experiences residents have ample exposure to mammography
and breast ultrasonography as well as great opportunity to improve their history and physical examination skills as pertains
to breast disease and their skills in fine needle, core, and open biopsy techniques.
Adolescent Medicine
During our PGY I primary care rotation, our residents will spend one half-day each week in the Adolescent Medicine Clinic
of the Department of Pediatrics. The attending will be the chairman of pediatrics who also specializes in infectious diseases
or another staff pediatrician who has special expertise in adolescent medicine. Residents will care for an average of 5-7
patients during each clinic session. The clinic emphasizes primary and preventive care for adolescents, special communication
skills, and psychosocial needs of adolescents, as well as opportunity for general gynecologic care.
Emergency Department
PGYI residents have one month rotations in Einstein’s very busy academically oriented Emergency Medicine Department (50,000
visits yearly). OBGYN residents are fully integrated into the ED care team in triage, evaluation and management of all patients,
regardless of age, sex or condition upon arrival in the ED.
Primary Care
Residents spend six weeks in the office of a senior Einstein primary care physician, fully integrated into the health promotion
and disease prevention, screening, and general health care activities of the office.
