Help With The Transition To Becoming A Mom

Our program begins with a personal consultation focused on the mother and her needs. Partners and caregivers may also attend these sessions, which focus on keeping baby safe and healthy. Check-in meetings are then scheduled to ensure mom and baby are on track.

    Topics of discussion can include:

    • Concerns about becoming a new parent
    • Basic baby care, breastfeeding, child development and choosing a daycare provider
    • Information on how to get services such as WIC, food stamps, health insurance, welfare, and baby supplies
    • Referrals to resources that can help a mom stay in school or gain skills for a job
    • Environmental home safety assessment
    • Confirmation that home visits, well checks, benefits and insurance are in place
    • Assisting with pediatrician selection and ensuring that the baby’s vaccinations are up-to-date
    • Supporting the emotional, mental and physical well-being of the relationship between the teen and their parent/caregiver
    • Minimizing the risk of abuse and neglect

    Parenting Support Group

We offer a parenting support group that is open to teenage mothers and fathers with children of any age. This ongoing group allows participants to drop in and out at any time and features:

    • Discussions focused on basic baby care, child development, child temperament, daycare selection, breastfeeding and other topics
    • Information on obtaining free baby supplies, such as diapers, wipes, toys, books and SEPTA tokens
    • A supportive environment to ask questions and raise concerns with other teen parents

    Educational Workshops

Our development workshop series is for parents up to 25 years old with infants age six weeks to twenty-four months. The teen mother, teen mom’s caregiver, teen father and baby can attend together and childcare is provided for the teen’s children. The four-week series lasts 2.5 hours every Monday and lunch is provided. Each workshop is broken down into four mini-sessions consisting of:

    • Interaction time between the teen parent and her infant
    • Interaction time between the teen parent and her adult caregiver
    • Teen parent and adult caregiver roundtable discussions
