
John A. Handal, MD, has held the position of
Chairman and Residency Program Director of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1998. Dr. Handal is also Director of the Spine Program at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He is a Clinical Associate
Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and is Board Certified
by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Handal is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a 1984 graduate of the Albert
Einstein Medical Center Orthopaedic Residency Program. Dr. Handal completed fellowship training in sports medicine at Milton
S. Hershey Medical Center/Penn State University and two fellowships in orthopaedic traumatology at Maryland Institute of Emergency
Medical Services Systems in Maryland and Grant Medical Center in Ohio. At the conclusion of his fellowships, Dr. Handal returned
to Hershey, Pennsylvania to begin his practice and then relocated to Dallas, Texas where he remained in practice until 1996.
Dr. Handal returned to the Philadelphia area, initially to Temple University Hospital and then, accepting the position of
Chairman and Residency Program Director of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, returned to Albert Einstein Medical Center
in 1998.
Dr. Handal is an active member in various local and national medical, orthopaedic and spine societies. In 2002, Dr. Handal
was invited to and accepted a three year appointment as an Orthopaedic specialist site visitor for the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education and has recently been appointed to the Board of Oral Examiners by the American Board of Orthopaedic
Surgery and is a frequent invited reviewer for the
Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
