"Resident Education" is the guiding principle in the Department of Orthopaedics at Albert Einstein Medical Center. The dynamics
of the educational goals and objectives for the residency program are directed towards the development of an exceptional physician.
Our Orthopaedic Residency Program is a five-year categorical program with the first year of postgraduate training consisting
primarily of general surgery. The year ends with three months of orthopaedic surgery as a basis for continued training. The
PGY-1 schedule fully meets the new training requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
Residency Review Committee and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Albert Einstein Medical Center is a major teaching
affiliate of Jefferson Medical College/Thomas Jefferson University. Senior medical students from medical schools throughout
Philadelphia and across the United States complete elective rotations in Einstein’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
A staff of 11 Board-Certified Orthopaedic surgeons anchors the teaching program, bringing residents their expertise in such
diverse areas as: rheumatology, reconstructive surgery for arthritis, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, pediatric orthopaedic
surgery, spinal surgery, biomechanics, neuromuscular disorders, arthroscopy and sports medicine, shoulder and elbow surgery,
joint replacement, orthopaedic trauma, geriatrics, and orthopaedic rehabilitation. Staff members hold academic appointments
at Jefferson Medical College/Thomas Jefferson University.
Research is an integral component of orthopaedic resident education at Albert Einstein Medical Center. The Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery Bioengineering Laboratory is fully equipped and located on the Einstein campus for basic science projects. The Department
employs a full-time research scientist to oversee basic science and clinical research projects.
The Department fully funds resident attendance at required educational conferences as well as research projects accepted for
presentation at local and/or national orthopaedic meetings.
