Research encourages a questioning approach in residents, develops skills of critical thinking and enables residents to read
and evaluate orthopaedic literature more critically.
All residents are required to actively participate in research projects throughout their residencies. A two-year cycle is
allotted for research projects culminating in the PGY-3 and PGY-5 years with manuscripts that qualify for submission to a
refereed journal.
Full-time physicians actively engaged in research are available at all times for project ideas and supervision.
During PGY-2 and PGY-4 the resident is allotted one full month to fully develop research projects and is relieved of all clinical
duties except night call.
Access to modern computer equipment including three personal computers, laptop, two laser printers, fax machine, VCR and DVD
players, digital camera , CD burner and scanner is available within the resident office suite. A contemporary library with
the latest in orthopaedic textbooks, literature and videotapes and CD-ROMs is also housed within the resident office suite,
in addition to resources found in the main Medical Center library. Several new clinical and academic resources are now available
online through the institution.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery research laboratory is located on campus in the Korman Research Pavilion and is available
at all times for resident research projects. The Korman Research Pavilion offers facilities for animal research, including
a surgical area, necropsy, roentgenography and radioactive research. A microvascular laboratory, and gait/motion and upper
extremity/motor control analysis also are available.
