Research

Resident research within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is designed to provide resident education in basic/clinical research, research design and methodology. These experiences offer the resident an opportunity to explore an area of special interest and focus on the scientific aspects of orthopaedic surgery. Residents are required to participate in research throughout their five years of training. Full-time physicians actively engaged in research are available at all times for project ideas and supervision. A full-time research scientist heads the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Bioengineering Laboratory and is available to assist with resident research. PGY 2 and PGY 4 residents complete a required one-month research rotation as part of their educational curriculum. The Program requires that two projects of sufficient quality for publication or presentation at a national/local meeting be completed prior to graduation. Residents are encouraged to submit their research for presentation at local and national meetings. The Department fully funds all costs associated with resident attendance at these meetings.

Under the direction of S. Praveen Samuel, D Eng., the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Bioengineering Laboratory is located on campus in the Korman Research Pavilion and is available at all times for resident research projects. The orthopaedic laboratory is equipped with personal computers, a C-Arm dedicated for research, a mechanical testing machine (Test Resources Inc) and a small machine shop. The laboratory is stocked with the necessary essentials needed for orthopaedic research such as a biological saftey cabin, standard microscopes, microscope camera, chemical hood, electronic weighing balances, spectrophotometer, ultrasonic baths, electroporator, centrifuges, tissue culture incubators, water baths, ovens, diamond saw, dental light curing oven, etc. In addition, the Korman Research Pavilion offers facilities for animal research, including a surgical area, necropsy and microsurgery.

A contemporary library with the latest in orthopaedic textbooks, literature, DVD's and CD-ROMs is also housed within the resident office suite. These are in addition to resources found in the main Medical Center library. Clinical and academic resources are available online through the institution. USB drives are provided to each resident to store research data. Access to modern computer equipment including personal computers, laptop, two laser printers, fax machine, DVD player, digital camera, CD burner and scanner is available within the resident office suite.
