Matilde Irigoyen, MD

The Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Albert Einstein Medical Center is committed to providing excellent care for infants, children and adolescents in need of primary, subspecialty, inpatient or outpatient care. The department’s focus is largely primary care for those in the surrounding neighborhoods and subspecialty care for patients throughout North, Northeast and Northwest Philadelphia. Patient care service is contemporary in technical expertise and provided through a compassionate family-oriented model.

Our department continues a long tradition of over 50 years of teaching medical students and pediatric, internal medicine/pediatric, and pediatric-PM&R residents and regularly contributes to new medical knowledge through research sponsored by various groups including the Albert Einstein Society and federal government agencies. The Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine is strongly committed to the patient community it serves through Einstein Community Health Associates, our primary care network, and to our graduating pediatric residents for employment opportunities in pediatrics.

In 2003, an innovative collaborative patient care model for clinical services was developed with St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. The "Einstein Inpatient Unit" is housed and operates at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children under the direction of Einstein faculty.  Einstein residents complete their inpatient rotations on this Einstein service and are supervised by our pediatric faculty.  In addition, subspecialty physicians from St. Christopher's Hospital for Children complement our department’s array of subspecialties. The combination of clinical resources from Albert Einstein Medical Center, Einstein Community Health Associates and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children provides our resident physicians with rich opportunities for clinical experience and education.

Matilde Irigoyen, MD is Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  Dr. Irigoyen received her medical degree from Buenos Aires University School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency and pediatric ambulatory care fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.

Dr. Irigoyen has published extensively in the areas of medical education, immunizations, and the care of inner city children.  She has a strong background in quality primary pediatric care, medical education and community service, with special interests in integrating medical education through service learning models that are responsive to the child health needs of the community.  Dr. Irigoyen previously served as Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Population and Family Health and Director, Division of General Pediatrics and Program Director, General Pediatrics Fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, New York.
