Many pediatric subspecialties are represented by the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics. Specialists are available for
teaching and clinical training in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Some one-month rotations are available in subspecialties at Einstein Medical Center. A complete range of subspecialty rotations
is available to Einstein Medical Center pediatric residents at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and, in some cases,
at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Adolescent Medicine
The Albert Einstein Medical Center pediatric residency program curriculum includes two designated four-week rotations in adolescent
medicine, one during the intern year and again in second year. In addition, residents gain experience with adolescents during
inpatient and outpatient general pediatrics rotations. The adolescent medicine team, which includes pediatricians, nurse practitioners
and adolescent health counselors, provides general preventive care to teenagers and also addresses special healthcare concerns
including pubertal development, sexuality and contraception, substance use and abuse and behavioral problems. One component
of the program is a Title X grant for family planning activities. The adolescent program also provides consultation, teaching
and research opportunities. The Teen Clinic occupies a separate area within the ambulatory pediatrics center.
Allergy/Asthma
The Albert Einstein Medical Center pediatric residency program curriculum includes a designated one-month rotation with a
board-certified pediatric allergist providing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for children.
A care coordinator/educator for children with chronic diseases has been very successful in coordinating the management of
children with asthma and reducing their need for hospitalization. Comprehensive respiratory therapy and nursing promote optimal
management of the child hospitalized with asthma.
Behavioral Pediatrics/Developmental Medicine
The Albert Einstein Medical Center pediatric residency program curriculum includes two designated one-month rotations that
encompass behavioral pediatrics and developmental medicine. With a board-certified developmental pediatrician, child psychologist,
and multidisciplinary neonatal team, residents will gain experience in identifying and managing children with a variety of
issues such as enuresis, encopresis, sleep disorders, autism spectrum disorders, mental retardation, attention deficit disorders
and learning disabilities. Residents will hone advocacy skills by learning to access community resources for these children.
Cardiology
Using a full array of diagnostic procedures, including color-flow Doppler echocardiography, to evaluate children with suspected
heart disease, pediatric cardiology colleagues from SCHC provide consultative services. They also coordinate a series of teaching
conferences for residents.
Child Psychiatry
Child psychiatrists from the Albert Einstein Medical Center Department of Psychiatry provide expert consultation in the outpatient setting.
Residents spend a one month block rotation in the child psychiatry emergency unit, one of the few in the area, and with the
Child and Adolescent Rapid Assessment and Treatment Team (CARAT).
Endocrinology
A full-time pediatric endocrinologist oversees inpatient and outpatient evaluation and treatment of children with a broad
range of endocrine problems including diabetes, growth disorders, thyroid disorders, delayed or precocious sexual development,
cryptorchidism, adrenal disorders and disorders of bone and mineral metabolism. Residents participate in endocrine clinic
and a monthly case-based endocrine conference.
Gastroenterology
Residents can participate in a busy pediatric gastroenterology service at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children where children
are evaluated and treated for disorders of nutrition, the gastrointestinal tract and the liver.
Genetics
The genetics team at Einstein Medical Center consists of a board-certified clinical geneticist and three masters-trained genetic
counselors. The Division of Genetics and Developmental Medicine provides comprehensive services in several areas. In depth
evaluation, with ongoing counseling and support of both pediatric and adult patients with birth defects, developmental delay,
metabolic disease and failure to thrive is available. Prenatal counseling and cancer genetics counseling are also offered.
Areas of research include an international anophthalmia/microphthalmia registry and coordination of eye development gene screening
among several laboratories. A genetics counselor coordinates a comprehensive risk assessment program for menopausal women
with a history of breast cancer.
Hematology/Oncology
A full-time pediatric hematologist/oncologist is involved in the evaluation and treatment of children with various anemias,
bleeding disorders, leukemias and solid tumors. Einstein Medical Center administers a state-funded program for children with
sickle cell disease.
Infectious Disease/Immunology
A full-time specialist treats children with infectious diseases and immunological disorders. All residents attend a weekly
infectious disease conference. Residents on the required infectious diseases/immunology rotation participate in inpatient
and outpatient consultations; attend a tuberculosis case management conference at the Philadelphia Department of Health; and
have a brief refresher program in clinical microbiology, virology and serology.
Neonatology
The faculty includes six full-time, board-certified neonatologists with a broad range of experience and expertise in the care
of healthy and sick newborn infants. 3,000 babies are delivered annually at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. Patient care
and research in a Level III intensive care nursery are enhanced by a dedicated team of nurses, respiratory therapists and
physicians as well as by contemporary methods of patient management, including the use of nitric oxide and high frequency
oscilator ventilation. The Division of Neonatology works closely with Einstein Medical Center's perinatology program in the
management of high-risk pregnancies. The Division of Neonatology is consistently recognized for its excellence in teaching,
patient care, and research. Senior residents in our NICU function as fellows and receive one of the best NICU experiences
available in the city.
Neurology
A board-certified pediatric neurologist from St. Christopher's Hospital for Children provides comprehensive services for children
with neurological disorders including seizures, headaches, developmental delay, ADD/ADHD, movement disorders, neuromuscular
disorders and cerebral palsy.
Pulmonology
A pulmonologist is available to evaluate and treat children with acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory system. Facilities
include a full-service pulmonary function testing laboratory and fiberoptic bronchoscopy capability.
