The Department of Surgery offers a preliminary year in general surgery for residents preparing for careers in the surgical subspecialties of orthopaedic surgery, ENT, urology and neurosurgery. These residents can also enroll for a second optional year if they wish to enter subspecialty programs that require two years of general surgery training. The yearly rotation schedule for the preliminary residents is similar to that of the categorical residents.
