Beginning in her teens, every woman should receive medical care from a gynecologist. Throughout her life the level of care she requires may vary from the routine to the complex. Most of the time, a woman may only need to visit her physician for a yearly exam. At other times, she may need to visit more often if a problem develops. A woman who plans to become pregnant or who already is pregnant should be under the care of a gynecologist who is also an obstetrician (often referred to as an ob/gyn). An obstetrician has the proper training, licensing and insurance to deliver babies. This physician also provides prenatal care to the mother-to-be to help ensure that the baby and the mother are healthy during the pregnancy and delivery.

Glossary of Terms:
Gynecologist– A physician who is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of problems of the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and vulva.
Obstetrician– A physician who is trained to deliver babies and provide prenatal care to pregnant women to help ensure that the baby develops normally.
