Claire Pouncey, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist and a philosopher of science. She received her BA in Biomedical Ethics from Brown
University and her MD and PhD in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Pouncey completed her residency in general
adult psychiatry at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania, and she was board certified in 2006. Dr. Pouncey
currently works on the psychiatry faculty of Belmont Behavioral Health in Philadelphia, where she is a general adult psychiatrist.
Dr. Pouncey is the Associate Director for the Psychiatry residency training program. She is working toward establishing and
chairing the Belmont Behavioral Health ethics committee. Dr. Pouncey’s doctoral dissertation addressed the concept of nosological
validity with respect to psychiatry’s system of classification, and she continues to be involved in philosophy of psychiatry,
in addition to psychiatric ethics. She currently is an elected member of the Classification and Diagnosis section of the World
Psychiatric Association, and is an executive committee member of the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy in Psychiatry.
