Warning Signs of Suicidal Behavior

Unfortunately, depression causes at least half of all suicides in America. Depression accounts for almost one-third of all suicides among college students. For adolescents, suicide is the second leading cause of death. Women attempt suicide more often than men, but men are more likely to complete the act.

A person with depression is at high risk for suicide, especially when other factors come into play.

Here are some warning signs that signal a person may be contemplating suicide.
  • Withdrawal: The person is unwilling to communicate and spends as much time alone as possible. The person avoids pleasurable activities or hobbies once enjoyed, such as reading or skating.
  • Problems at work or at school: These are usually related to withdrawal — not completing assigned projects or responsibilities.
  • Moodiness: The person may be "high" one day and "down" the next. If calmness follows an intense period of depression, this can be a dangerous sign that the person has already decided that suicide is the solution to his or her problems.
  • A life crisis: If a person is already depressed, a crisis such as a divorce or death of a loved one can trigger thoughts of suicide.
  • Threats: The person may threaten to commit suicide, or make comments like "I wish I had never been born." All threats of suicide should be treated seriously.
  • Giving items away: A person may start to give away cherished items when contemplating suicide.
  • Risky behavior: Risky sex or dangerous driving may be unconscious ways to get attention or attempt suicide.

If you think someone you know might be considering suicide, get help immediately.
