Anxiety and Aging

As we age, we are often faced with new challenges – physical, emotional and mental. At the same time, we may find it more difficult to adjust to changes in our lives which can cause an increased level of anxiety.

When people are faced with diminished health, it is natural to feel some anxiety. Activities such as walking, exercising or driving may become more difficult requiring us to change our behavior. Other life changes such as the loss of loved a one, retirement or loneliness can also create feelings of anxiety.

When feelings of worry and fear start to affect a person's daily life, it may be an indication of an anxiety disorder. Many older adults who experience debilitating anxiety may have a history of anxiety disorder but may find they are less able to cope as they age.  As their health diminishes or as their circumstances change, their ability to handle their anxiety decreases.

Anxiety disorders in the elderly are quite similar to those younger people experience and are equally treatable.

If you or someone you know shows signs of debilitating anxiety, don't wait for the problem to go away. Seek help now.
