The surgical oncology team at Albert Einstein Medical Center provides a variety of quality cancer care services.
- Our surgical oncologists provide support for cancer screening and early diagnosis, and perform diagnostic procedures and therapeutic
resections.
- Women at increased risk for cancers are evaluated at the Marion-Louise Saltzman Women’s Center and provided with education,
screening, genetic testing and counseling. Patients at high risk for breast cancer are offered treatment on the STAR (Study
of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene) trial. As active participants in the clinical trials, they have helped better define the role
of combined modality treatment in selected malignancies. In areas such as breast, rectal, bladder, larynx and prostate cancers,
less disfiguring surgery is often possible, resulting in improved quality of life for patients.
- Surgical oncology employs recently developed technical improvements, including video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS),
laparoscopy and laser treatment.
- Clinical trials of photodynamic therapy for patients with recurrent chest wall tumors have yielded promising early results.
- We have pioneered and continue to employ sentinel node biopsy, designed to give accurate staging information, while avoiding
complication of lymphedema.
The Department of Radiation Oncology, with offices located at
Albert Einstein Medical Center and
Einstein Center One, delivers high-quality care through a dedicated team of professionals and advanced equipment. The team consists of:
- 3 full-time radiation oncologists
- 2 physicists
- 2 dosimetrists
- 7 therapists
- 1 medical assistant
- 3 oncology nurses
The department actively supports clinical research protocols and retains full institution status with the Radiation Therapy
Oncology Group (RTOG).
Five board-certified physicians provide oncology primary care and consultative services to cancer patients at several locations
within the Einstein network. Patients receive treatment at the dedicated inpatient oncology unit, the Einstein Cancer Center
and at
Einstein Center One. Our medical oncologists have been appointed to leadership positions within the Jefferson Oncology Group and the Eastern
Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). They actively enroll and treat patients on clinical trials sponsored by the National Surgical
Adjuvant Breast Project (NSABP) and RTOG. In addition, medical oncology has worked with pharmaceutical companies in the development
of new chemotherapy regimens and new medications designed for improved symptom management.
