Electrophysiology

“After my visit to Einstein for rapid heart rhythms, I’m as good as new. The staff was wonderful and my family was kept involved throughout the procedure.”
— Gerald Klein, EPS Lab patient

Electrophysiology is the study of the electrical circuits that keep our hearts beating. Sometimes, these electrical currents can make your heart skip a beat, or beat too fast or too slowly.

That’s where the heart specialists at Einstein’s Electrophysiology Study (EPS) Lab come in. These doctors measure, manipulate and restore electrical function in patients’ hearts.

Einstein’s Minerva and Fred Braemer Heart Center offers an EPS Lab and Arrhythmia Clinic to diagnose and treat even the most complex heart rhythm disorders. Einstein offers heart care for all sorts of rhythm disorders, including:

Bradycardia: A heart rate slower than 60 beats per minute. Under certain circumstances, this slow heart rhythm can be treated with a device known as a pacemaker.

Tachycardia: A heart rate greater than 100 beats per minute. Under certain circumstances, these fast heart rhythms may need to be evaluated and treated.

Supraventricular Tachycardia: A fast heart rhythm in the upper chamber of the heart that can often be cured by a procedure called an ablation.

Atrial Fibrillation: A heart rhythm in which the atria (upper chambers of the heart) become electrically unstable, losing their ability to properly contract.

Atrial Flutter: A heart rhythm originating in the atria of the heart that usually can be cured by a procedure called an ablation.

Ventricular Fibrillation: A life-threatening rhythm originating in a ventricle (lower chamber) of the heart. After identifying this rhythm through an electrophysiology (EP) study, it may be necessary to implant a defibrillator.

Ventricular Tachycardia: A potentially life-threatening, accelerated rhythm originating in the ventricle (lower chamber) of the heart. After identification of this rhythm through an electrophysiology (EP) study, it may be necessary to implant a defibrillator.

Heart Rhythm Disorder (also known as Arrhythmia): An abnormal heartbeat that causes the heart to pump less effectively.
