Electrophysiology - Diagnosis

To diagnose heart rhythm disorders, doctors thread thin wires called catheters through patients’ veins or arteries and into the heart. The wires help record electrical signals from the heart's inner surface. This helps our heart doctors make accurate diagnoses and find the most appropriate treatment.

Doctors who perform electrophysiologic tests are called interventional cardiologists. Using methods that are not as invasive as open heart surgery, interventional cardiologists use diagnostic procedures such as:

  • Tilt table tests, which can help cardiologists find out if there is a problem with the body’s ability to regulate heart rate and blood pressure.

  • Cardiac mapping, an advanced electrophysiology test. As its name implies, cardiac mapping “maps” the electrical system of your heart with color views. This helps your cardiologist to know precisely where the abnormal heart rhythm originates.

The BioSense mapping system displays the heart's pumping rhythm in color, allowing physicians to find the source of a rhythm disturbance in a precise manner.
