Mitral Valve Repair
When possible, Einstein's heart surgeons offer patients with diseased or damaged mitral valves the option of valve repair
instead of the more commonly performed replacement, sparing their patients from life-long
anticoagulant drug therapy.
Einstein surgeons believe so strongly in mitral valve repair that they are continually learning new techniques to make it
an option for more patients. One technique is
anterior mitral valvuloplasty that makes valve repair an option for patients who would otherwise require valve replacement.
Mitral and Aortic Valve Replacement
The new biologic (stentless) valve is a totally organic tissue valve with no metal or plastic parts. Biologic valves actually
grow into the heart's tissue within six months.
Patients who with biologic valves do not have to take anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drugs. After valve surgery, most people
must take blood-thinning drugs to ensure their newly repaired or replaced valves remain in good working order.
